In LST’s 125th year, our commercial director Robert Tuffin, reflects on the success of the family business, plans for the future, and carving a career in construction.
What do you think are LST’s most significant achievements?
We’re proud to have been appointed to deliver some really significant projects, improving facilities in both the healthcare and education sectors. These include constructing the new £4.5m Oncology facility at Southampton General Hospital, redeveloping St John the Baptists School in Woking and completing a major refurbishment project to the Wotton Boarding House at Eton College.
At the same time, we have continued to grow the business and enhance our offer, which led to the acquisition of FIS Construction Products, a specialist supplier of substructure waterproofing products.
How has LST managed to stand the test of time?
The secret to our success is our people. We have a great team committed to all pulling in the same direction to provide an outstanding service to our clients. And we make sure our people and our sub-contractors are always looked after and well supported.
In the rapidly changing world of construction, we stay one step ahead of the latest developments to ensure we remain competitive and consistently deliver high quality facilities to our clients.
What have been the biggest changes at LST and what impact have had these had on the business?
The biggest changes have been driven by new team members. We’ve had the pleasure of appointing lots of new talent in recent years and that’s brought invaluable experience and skills to LST across surveying, estimating and contract management.
What are LST’s plans for the future?
LST Projects have a strong reputation in the healthcare sector, which we are continuing to build on. With specialist knowledge of this industry and a proven track record in delivering an excellent service, we know that there are plenty of opportunities for further growth.
LST continue to focus on developing relationships with key clients such as Eton College and other highly regarded institutions.
What advice would you give to anyone wanting to pursue a successful career in construction?
Construction involves lots of different jobs, so always look at the bigger picture. If you take an interest in other people’s roles as well as your own, you’ll learn more, become a better team player and be well placed to take advantage of opportunities to further progress your career.
Who or what has had the biggest influence on your career at LST?
My father has had the biggest influence on my career. I was told to always be ready to take advice and to learn from others. It’s a simple but really effective statement that I still follow to this day.
