LST Projects has completed a fast-track refurbishment project for the University of Southampton.
Delivered in 16 weeks, the contract saw LST partner with Rekan to upgrade part of Building 19, formerly used by the Faculty of Engineering and Physical Sciences.
The area was completely stripped out, including the removal of interior walls to reconfigure the space. Steelwork was installed to accommodate new mechanical ductwork together with new acoustic partition walls, ceilings, doors, floor coverings, and decorations.
A comprehensive mechanical and electrical package added to the scope of works, including new audio-visual equipment, anew air handling unit and Airmaster ventilation equipment.
Externally, LST was also responsible for creating new decking areas.
As well as managing the works alongside another principal contractor on a neighbouring site, LST had to minimise disruption for a department within the same building. The Auditory ImplantService, located on the floor below LST’s working area, remained operational throughout the project. Given the nature of this department, which treats profoundly deaf adults and children, no noise or vibrations were permitted during its opening hours.
Sean Campbell, Contracts Manager for LST, said: “This was a logistically challenging project which required us to carefully navigate our works around another contractor while ensuring we didn’t disturb the busy department below. Any noisy works were carried out early in the morning or evenings to minimise disruption and to make sure we met the tight construction programme.”
The successful upgrade to Building 19 follows LST’s fast-track refurbishment of Building 60 at the University of Southampton at the end of 2023. Also working with Rekan, LST created an Independent Learning Space for the Electronics and Computer Science department.
