The first part of the works saw the team create a new ‘day assessment unit’ for monitoring babies during pregnancy. Part of an existing labour ward at Salisbury Hospital was refurbished to provide eight new consulting rooms and a reception desk.
The second phase involved the construction of a new birthing centre for low-risk women. In addition to building two birthing suites, LST was responsible for upgrading facilities including toilets, a kitchen and reception desk.
LST has also created a new main reception area, which serves all the hospital’s maternity departments, including the new facilities. This has been constructed between the birthing centre and day assessment unit, enabling safe and convenient access into each building.
Chris Taylor, Contracts Manager for LST, said: “Both phases were delivered in a very busy environment within close proximity to members of the public and the parking bay for emergency ambulances. Our site also bordered a road which was used daily for transporting oxygen into the hospital and removing waste.
“We held weekly meetings with the nursing staff and the hospital’s capital projects team so that any potential issues could be raised and addressed. This ensured the project was delivered safely and efficiently, reducing the risk of any disruption.”
This is the second time LST has helped to enhance facilities at Salisbury Hospital. The team refurbished an operating theatre for the obstetrics department, including new hygienic flooring, IPS panelling, sanitaryware, medical storage, and upgrades to door protections and finishes.
