LST was appointed to deliver a new Independent Learning Space (ILS) for the Electronics and Computer Science (ECS) department at the University of Southampton. The project involved the complete strip-out and refurbishment of an existing two-storey building to create a modern, dedicated student learning environment.
The works included the removal of all existing finishes, electrical and mechanical installations, the replacement of sections of curtain walling, and the creation of a new entrance to the building. This was a fast-tracked programme to meet the client’s preferred timeline and ensure students could begin using the space from 1st December 2023.
The newly created space benefits from a mechanical ventilation system, new air handling units (AHUs) installed on the roof, and upgraded electrical installations including data, access control, and fire detection systems. Internally, new walling systems and glazed screens were installed, alongside new ceilings, floor coverings, and high-quality decorative finishes.
Additional improvements include new male and female WCs, an accessible WC, speed gates for improved security, acoustic quiet study areas, and a large AV screen that provides an impressive focal point for collaborative learning and presentations.
We were proud to work alongside the University of Southampton and Rekan on this successful project, delivering a high-quality learning space within a live university environment.
