Theatres and Discharge Lounge

Rooftop mechanical and ventilation plant installed by LST Projects at Queen Alexandra Hospital as part of the Theatres and Discharge Lounge redevelopment.

LST Projects worked in partnership with Principal Designer Equans at Queen Alexandra Hospital in Portsmouth.

The project involved the strip-out and internal fit-out of space to create two new operating theatres, complete with specialist theatre equipment. The works included a new mechanical and electrical installation, incorporating a packaged plant room and AHU located on an existing roof.

To facilitate this, multiple crane lifts were carried out over the existing five-storey building and link walkway, reaching approximately 60 metres. This enabled the installation of new concrete plinths, a steel grillage, and the packaged plant room. The mechanical installation also included a new BMS, which was fully integrated into the hospital’s existing system.

Working within a live hospital environment, LST encountered several logistical challenges. It was essential to minimise disruption—including noise—to ensure that other hospital services continued without negative impact on staff or patients. Out-of-hours working was scheduled where required, with daily liaison maintained between the hospital’s management team and Equans.

Close collaboration was key to keeping the programme on track, meeting the expectations of all parties, and delivering a high-quality project.
