LST Projects has successfully completed the first phase of a major refurbishment at Princess Anne Hospital in Southampton, helping to transform one of the UK’s largest neonatal units. This essential upgrade has created a more modern, comfortable, and supportive environment for some of the most vulnerable patients and their families.
Working closely with NHS Property Services and the wider design team, the project saw the creation of two new wards, each providing space for eight cots and incorporating pull-down parent beds. A dedicated special care room was also delivered, offering five additional cot spaces. To further support the needs of new families, three hotel-style parent and baby rooms were constructed, providing privacy, comfort, and dignity during what can be an incredibly emotional time.
Beyond the clinical areas, the project introduced a suite of family-focused facilities, including a parent relaxation lounge with food prep space, a quiet room, and a private expressing area — all designed to support rest and recovery. New on-site accommodation for doctors and care teams also ensures staff are well-supported in delivering round-the-clock care.
Significant infrastructure upgrades included the installation of large air-handling units to maintain clean, regulated air, and medical spines equipped with lifesaving equipment, all backed by UPS battery systems to guarantee uninterrupted power — essential in neonatal care.
Importantly, this refurbishment is among the first in the UK to meet the new standards set by the Building Safety Regulator. Successfully passing Gateway 3, it sets a new benchmark for safety, compliance, and accountability across the healthcare sector.
