That’s why we were so delighted when the project manager for West Berkshire Council referred to LST as ‘undoubtedly one of the most honest and conscientious contractors’ that he has worked with ‘in a very long time’ following a recent refurbishment and ground floor extension at Calcot School in Reading.
The scheme involved alterations and a ground floor extension to form a new office, staff room, library, circulation space and WC facilities, including associated modifications to building services.
The project drew on our experience of working in live school environments, involving close communication with the school’s management team to programme the works and ensure pupil safety, along with a tailored approach to managing site access and movement of heavy plant.
A phased approach to project delivery enabled the LST team to manage work within the building without disrupting normal school routines, and temporary studwork ensured that children were safely segregated from our operations while enabling work to continue during term time.
While some of the more intrusive works were carried out during the summer recess, LST had to work considerately during term time to carry out major structural elements of the scheme, including excavation of the existing concrete and foundations to allow construction of a new staircase for the extension. Scheduling work to be done at weekends and painstakingly excavating the area by hand helped ensure business as usual for the school while keeping the demanding programme on track.
The scheme is typical of our creative approach to overcoming challenges and ensuring that we deliver high quality results with reliability, quality and safety on site.
