As a result, we decided to put our health and safety practices to the test to check they were completely watertight. We called on our external health and safety consultant – HCS Safety– to work with us to stage a mock incident at one of our construction sites.
The Scenario
HCS Safety responded to an emergency call to investigate, and report on, a mock live scenario of a serious nature. A full investigation began immediately with two HCS Safety personnel visiting the site along with senior management from LST.
The investigation lasted several weeks, followed by a full report. This was presented to senior management and highlighted the importance of demonstrating a strong commitment to health and safety and being aware of any improvements that need to be made.
HCS Safety said that after 18 years of trading, this was the first time they had been asked by one of their clients to perform this level of investigation, demonstrating a progressive company committed to achieving an excellent health and safety standard.
Sharing Best Practice
The findings of this investigation have since been presented to our Contracts Managers and Site Managers. Two presentations have been given to ensure that all site staff are aware of their legal responsibilities in line with the Health and Safety at Work etc Act 1974. The report was received responsibly by the whole team and is evidence of our Safety in Focus initiative.
To ensure we continuously improve health and safety standards, we will be holding further mock incidents at our construction sites, which will be unannounced to staff at all levels to create a near live scenario.
