Attitudes and values are critical factors in influencing an individual’s performance on site. The more engaged staff are in the company philosophy, the more likely their behaviour and attitude will reflect the safety systems and procedures in place. It is not sufficient to provide safe systems, equipment and PPE, if the culture doesn’t promote healthy and safe working.
According to recent research, effective leadership and a clear commitment from senior management will significantly improve safety performance – a philosophy that makes real sense! Successful leadership is essential in driving safe behaviours throughout a company and in developing a shared culture, where a positive attitude towards risk management and compliance with the control processes is the norm.
To build upon our excellent health and safety performance, LST have developed the ‘Safety in Focus’ initiative. This initiative captures our company wide approach to the management of health and safety and engages staff, subcontractors, partners and customers with our mission. The initiative was developed in conjunction with staff to provide ownership and foster a sense of personal responsibility. It encompasses all elements of our approach to health and safety and helps us to communicate our key messages and behaviours that, with everything we do, safety is our number one consideration. We must always find the safest way of working, above anything else. This applies to every element of our business and to every member of our team.
As the initiative progresses, it will be reinforced to the site teams by our NEBOSH qualified Health and Safety Manager, Tim Woodcock. Tim will be instrumental in ensuring the message is communicated both internally and externally.
LST have an excellent reputation within the industry for our high safety standards. To remain at the forefront requires constant assessment of our performance and a forward-thinking approach. The ‘Safety in Focus’ initiative will demonstrate our commitment in a tangible way, allowing us to positively engage our staff as we continue to ensure that a focus on safety is ingrained within our business.
