LST has successfully completed the relocation of the Child Development Centre (CDC) to a newly constructed facility within the Yellow Wing, addressing long-standing overcrowding issues in the Green Wing.
Delivered within a nine-month programme, the project involved a full demolition and redesign of the existing second-floor layout. The new environment includes an acoustically optimised audiology suite built to a "box in box" specification, ensuring sound isolation for clinical assessments. A range of specialist therapy rooms was also constructed to meet exacting acoustic standards.
To improve functionality, new sliding and folding partitions were installed between therapy and gym areas, along with three overhead hoists and a bespoke acoustic sliding door for enhanced privacy and flexibility.
A key element of the scheme was the creation of a welcoming new reception and waiting area. Designed with children and families in mind, the space features a sculptural tree centrepiece and integrated seating, providing a calming and accessible environment with passive surveillance to enhance safety.
Despite the complexity of the internal reconfiguration, the works were completed on time and to a high standard, with minimal disruption to surrounding departments.
The success of the project has been recognised with multiple industry awards. It won Best Branded Interior at the UK Graphics Awards through Signs Express Southampton, and the project itself—delivered for Surrey and Sussex Healthcare NHS Trust—was named Refurbishment Project of the Year at the IHEEM Healthcare Estates Awards 2024, with architectural design led by Jefferson Sheard Architects

“The new centre looks fantastic and will help us deliver care to children and families in a more innovative and multi-professional manner. It will assist us in focusing on patient-centered care in an environment that is
designed to be friendly and welcoming for children, young people, and their families. The health and wellbeing of staff has been significantly enhanced and we can already see a more positive response from children and families when they arrive for their appointments.” Helen Watson, Clinical Service Manager.
