LST Projects assisted University Hospital Southampton (UHS) in expanding an eye unit to meet the growing demands of its services, which have increased significantly in recent years. Integrated with the existing outpatient department, the expansion of the ophthalmology unit features 40 new spaces. These include additional clinic rooms with vision aisles, new imaging rooms, laser rooms, storage facilities, toilets, a spacious waiting area, a reception, a nurse station, and a baby changing area.

Positioned between two operational areas, with a cancer care unit above and a radiotherapy department below, the project presented significant logistical challenges.

The works involved constructing a three-storey air handling unit (AHU) complete with support steels and access platforms for roof maintenance. The roof of the radiotherapy department was converted into flooring, with screed laid down before latex was applied across the entire 860 sq m area.

Following the drainage system upgrade, LST installed partition walls and prepared the ductwork for the AHU. Mechanical and electrical services were fitted above the ceiling grid, including the installation of over 200 individual data cables originating from an IT hub to each new room.

The project concluded with the meticulous fitting out of each room, all completed within a six-month timeframe and delivered on schedule by LST.

LST has undertaken numerous construction projects at UHS, including the development of the cancer care unit situated above the ophthalmology centre. The £7.3 million oncology centre, opened in December 2020, is another testament to LST’s enduring partnership with the hospital.

“Everyone will benefit from this fabulous new build for which our patients and staff have waited so patiently for. It provides the space and capacity we need to care for this ever-growing patient group. It will help us catch up and bring the standard of facilities up to meet the quality of expert care our clinicians deliver every day. It is going to make a huge difference to our patients.” Suzy Pike, Lead Matron for Ophthalmology at UHS
