University Hospital Southampton – Eye Unit

LST Projects helped University Hospital Southampton (UHS) to expand an eye unit to meet increasing demand on the service which has been growing steadily over recent years.

Linked to the existing outpatient department, the ophthalmology expansion features 40 new spaces, including additional clinic rooms with vision aisles, new imaging rooms, laser rooms, storage, toilets, a large waiting area, a reception, nurse station, and a baby changing area.

The logistically challenging project took place between two live areas with a cancer care unit situated above and radiotherapy department below.

The scope of works saw LST construct a three-storey air handling unit (AHU) with support steels and access platforms enabling maintenance on the roof. The roof of the radiotherapy department was then converted into flooring. Screed was laid prior to installing latex across the entire 860 sq m area.

After upgrading the drainage system, LST fitted partition walls and prepared the ductwork for the AHU. Mechanical and electrical services were installed above the ceiling grid, including more than 200 individual data cables which ran from an IT hub into each new room.

The final part of the project involved fitting out each room, with all works delivered on time by LST and in less than six months.

LST has delivered numerous construction projects at UHS, including the cancer care unit located above the ophthalmology centre. The £7.3m oncology centre was opened in December 2020.

“Everyone will benefit from this fabulous new build for which our patients and staff have waited so patiently for. It provides the space and capacity we need to care for this ever-growing patient group. It will help us catch up and bring the standard of facilities up to meet the quality of expert care our clinicians deliver every day. It is going to make a huge difference to our patients.”
Suzy Pike, Lead Matron for Ophthalmology at UHS
